Goal Two

Goal 2: 40% of all undergraduate students engage in student or student-faculty research during their time at Gonzaga. (Target: 2020)

Progress:

Since the approval of the Strategic Plan in 2015 the University has developed a number of innovative and collaborative programs to encourage, support, and highlight student or student-faculty research. These programs include:

Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry

The College of Arts & Sciences launched the Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry (CURCI) in 2016 in order to promote, publicize, facilitate, and celebrate the transformative educational experiences that occur through student-faculty collaborations. CURCI's mission is to support the students and faculty that are transforming the educational experience in the College of Arts & Sciences and tell the world about their work.

Whether that’s a student on a Morris Fellowship in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences studying Zambian choral music from an ethnomusicologist’s perspective, or students using travel funds from CURCI to attend a national chemistry conference to present their research in a professional setting for the first time, CURCI’s mission is to support the students and faculty that are transforming the educational experience in the College of Arts & Sciences and tell the world about their work.

Morris Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Established in 2017 thanks to a generous donation from Scott and Liz (Tomich, '80) Morris, the Morris Undergraduate Research Fellowships are awarded to student-faculty research teams in the arts, humanities, and social sciences disciplines in the Gonzaga University College of Arts & Sciences. These fellowships are awarded to original, student-driven research projects that are carried out during the summer months under the mentorship of a faculty member in the College. Both the student and the faculty mentor receive a stipend for this work.

Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference

The Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference (SIRC) provides an opportunity for students from across majors and disciplines, to present their research and scholarship, receive meaningful feedback, and develop scholarly community. SIRC, now in its 16th year, is organized by Gonzaga University and Whitworth University, alternating between campuses each year. This celebration of undergraduate research is open to all undergraduate students in the Spokane area and costs nothing to attend.
