Community, Culture, and Language

In an increasing diverse society, teachers and professionals of all kinds need to have the knowledge and skills to support and value a multiplicity of perspectives. In this major, students will gain a sophisticated, practical understanding of the ways in which cultures, languages, and literacies support and challenge communities. This degree is designed to support those individuals who are pursuing careers in elementary and community education.

B.Ed. in Community, Culture, and Language is a 37-credit major with two concentrations.

Concentrations

Elementary Education:

  • Students receive Washington State Elementary certification with English Language Learner and Reading endorsements.
  • Site-based clinical experience.
  • 120 hour TESOL Certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
  • Cultural and linguistic immersion experiences.
  • Hands-on advocacy projects.
  • Interdisciplinary learning.

Community Education:

  • Interdisciplinary focus.
  • Complementary integration with Gonzaga’s Core.
  • 120 hour TESOL Certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
  • Exposure to opportunities with NGO’s, NPO’s, or any organization with a global focus.
