Make lasting memories.
Young students always enjoy smiles and interaction with Gonzaga volunteer students. The time spent in these programs provides rewards beyond the classroom.
Applications for SIA! typically open the first the day of each semester and are open for three weeks. After the application period closes, applicants are selected and notified whether they were able to receive a placement in the program for the semester.
The Science in Action! Program is a semester long commitment. During a typical semester we aim for 15-20 total hours of volunteering spread out over 8 weeks. We will have 4 workshops and 4-5 classroom visits this semester. The 15-20 hours is split between time spent working with your group of fellow GU volunteers in our weekly workshops at GU and in-person classroom visits where you will lead a science activity in partnering local K-6 classroom with your team. Read below to see an update on changes to our program due to the Covid-19 pandemic and an update about Fall Semester 2021.
As of Fall 2021, volunteers will be allowed back in classrooms. To participate in SIA!, volunteers must submit proof of vaccination to the Spokane Public School District and also wear a properly fitting mask while driving to and from the school and while inside the school building.
As of Sept 1st, 2021 it was announced that GU volunteers can go back into the classroom, however, it is important to note that not all schools or teachers will be comfortable with this. Our goal is to resume visiting our elementary partners in person, but at this time we cannot guarantee that will work for every classroom. We are currently working to find what will work best for each classroom we serve. We are here to support our community of teachers and elementary students in ways that will foster enthusiasm and confidence in science and also keep everyone safe!
